Our VP of Marketing and Communications, Pooja Rudra, has put out a call for a few extra hands. Our chapter is growing and doing a lot of new things to support the talent development mission in the Lehigh Valley, and it means we need to expand our outreach beyond what one person can reasonably achieve alone. Besides, when people with ideas and energy get together the results expand exponentially.
Right now, we are looking for two or three people who can give the chapter a few hours a month helping with Marketing and Communications. All of these outreach tasks come with professional benefits (and you get to know someone named Pooja!).
Specifically, we need someone:
1. To be our official liaison to the Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce. You will represent ATD at Chamber events. In addition to being a voice for talent development to the community, you are networking for yourself, as well. You’ll be meeting like-minded professionals and hear of opportunities for jobs and business ventures in the Lehigh Valley.
2. Who can create and send emails from existing templates. It requires adding date, time, location and topic of chapter events to an email template and scheduling them. No prior experience with Constant Contact is needed, and knowing how to use an email client is something you’d like to add to your skill set, this is perfect. You’ll schedule about one email a week. (Editor’s note: I used to do this task and Constant Contact is very easy to use! Takes about five minutes to learn.)
3. To call or email the ATD board members once a month to collect their content for our newsletter, Boardspectives. You just have to ask them for their short article and pass it on to Pooja. For new members, it is a good way to have direct and ongoing contact with board members, and to know the inside workings of the chapter.
4. Who can reach out to local newspapers, television stations and radio stations to ask them to consider featuring us when we have a special event or “just because”. This is a great opportunity for people interested in mass media. You will get exposure to core marketing functions as well as broaden your own social network with the local media.
When you join a professional association like ATD and attend meetings, you get some benefit by showing up at events. However, there are a lot more benefits to be had by getting involved and working with people on a regular basis. When you jump in to help with a few tasks, you will get to know people who are like you - people who also jump in and say yes when something needs to be done.
Sure, chapter membership is nice to put it on your resume. It is even nicer to be able to demonstrate that you get involved in your professional association. You can carry the skills and knowledge you gain as a volunteer to enhance your job and your career.
For whatever reason you signed up as a member of our chapter, you can double and triple those benefits by giving an hour or two a month to keeping the chapter running full steam and growing. And besides, we really need you. We promise you will be greeted with lots of smiles of appreciation!
